Tumbleweed Solar is a 350-megawatt solar energy project located on private property in Chaves County outside Roswell, New Mexico. 

The new solar energy project would interconnect to Xcel Energy’s Southwestern Public Service Company (SPS) transmission system at the Bitter Lake Switchyard, via a new substation and a 230-kilovolt generation-tie line. Those facilities are proposed on approximately 1,855 acres of private property, roughly 13 miles east of Roswell.

Tumbleweed Solar is expected to produce benefits with minimal impact:

• Clean energy generation without direct carbon emissions
• Connects new generation to the regional transmission system, supporting energy reliability 
• Safeguards to protect wildlife, water resources, cultural areas and other sensitive sites
• Controls for stormwater and erosion
• Economic benefits through construction jobs, local spending, tax revenue and landowner lease payments
